We are seeking a skilled Systems Engineer on a contract basis to join our team.

Job Description

We are actively seeking a Systems Engineer with strong Linux expertise and a self-driven work ethic. This role requires a versatile professional skilled in automating and securing environments across multiple platforms, including Linux servers, cloud infrastructure, networking technologies, and macOS desktop support. The ideal candidate will thrive in a distributed work environment, demonstrating excellent written communication skills and proficiency with remote collaboration tools. You will work independently while maintaining transparent workflows and collaborating with our remote team to maintain and enhance our diverse IT ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and enhance existing infrastructure while working closely with the team to implement automated, industry-standard solutions
• Document and automate existing processes to improve reproducibility and knowledge transfer
• Implement new roles and maintain Ansible infrastructure
• Expand monitoring coverage by adding checks and alerts to existing monitoring and metrics systems to improve system availability and performance visibility
• Efficiently manage Ubuntu and Debian Linux environments, demonstrating expertise in complex, multi-tier architectures
• Deploy cloud-agnostic solutions supporting both cloud and on-premise environments
• Collaborate with internal teams to understand requirements and deliver effective technical solutions

Qualifications

We’re looking for someone who brings a broad subset of these qualifications, coupled with a willingness to learn and grow in areas that are new or less familiar.

• 4+ years of experience in system administration or engineering, with a focus on Linux.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and a strong independent work ethic.
• A strong willingness to learn new technologies and adapt to evolving systems on the job. This includes staying abreast of the latest industry trends, being open to exploring unfamiliar tools and practices, and continuously enhancing personal and professional skills in line with the role’s demands.
• Working knowledge of Ansible with ability to create and maintain playbooks
• Familiarity with version control systems (Git)
• Experience in cloud environments (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud), emphasizing cloud-agnostic solutions.
• Demonstrated expertise in Docker, including containerization of applications, management of Docker images, orchestration with Docker Compose, and implementing Docker in various environments.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience with issue tracking and project management tools (JIRA or similar) for coordinating tasks and maintaining work visibility
• Knowledge of TCP/IP networking with firewalls and VPNs
• Directory services (FreeIPA, OpenLDAP, ..) and identity management (Authentik) experience
• Familiarity with DNS: experience with DNS server software such as PowerDNS and BIND, including setup, configuration, and management.
• Terraform expertise: familiarity with Terraform for infrastructure as code, enabling safe and efficient management of cloud and on-premises infrastructure.
• Knowledge of Hashicorp Vault (or equivalent): experience in managing secrets and protecting sensitive data using Hashicorp Vault or similar tools.
• Competence with scripting languages (Bash, Python, Perl).
